What are your main responsibilities in your current role?
A typical day at work, for me, is laying out a chip design, as an Implementation Engineer. My main roles include, but not limiting to:
- Implementing a design in a hardware environment (but this is done by software visualisations)
- Floorplanning what goes where on the chip (starting from logic gates, flops, memories and to every bit of wire connections)
- While keeping in mind that the design has to meet target area, power and frequency, in the real world
- Liaising with engineers from other departments, as every project requires multidisciplinary engineering.
Apart from the direct roles, I also aid and solve issues my colleagues are faced with. I also help in bringing new graduates upto speed with the work we do and also provide continual support to them. As an add on I am the Team Arm Champion for the Sheffield Arm Office. In this role, I head and manage all our volunteering/ community engagement/ educational outreach and fundraising initiatives, per year.
Please outline your career history/how did you get to where you are today?
I completed my Bachelors in Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, in the year 2016, from PES Institute of Technology, Bangalore, India. After my undergraduation, I joined as a Global Software Engineer in Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE). However, I really wanted to do my Masters, for which I had started the process of in March 2016. As the application processes, both with the university and for visa, were a success, I resigned from my role in HPE and started prepping to catch a flight to Sheffield. I joined ÀÖ¾ºÌåÓý, in the same year, to start my Masters degree course, on a Student Visa (Tier 4). I then completed my Masters in Science (Eng), Advanced Control and Systems Engineering, in the year 2017 (formal graduation ceremony was in January 2018). And soon after completing my Masters dissertation, I joined Arm as a Graduate Implementation Engineer, in September 2017. This is when I applied, through my company, to convert my existing Student Visa (Tier 4) to a Skilled Worker Visa (Tier 2 General). Following which I have been working at Arm, on a Tier 2 Visa, since February 2018. I have progressed since to an Implementation Engineer and am looking forward to my current role and future progressions.
