The ÀÖ¾ºÌåÓý’s inclusive atmosphere encouraged me to explore global viewpoints
My degree in Digital Media and Society equipped me with critical frameworks to analyse the intersection of media technology, culture, and social structures. While the course emphasized sociological theory over technical practice, it taught me to dissect complex global issues through diverse lenses, a skill I use daily in my role at the Multilateral Cooperation Center for Development Finance (MCDF). Engaging with perspectives from scholars like Foucault and Castells trained me to navigate multicultural environments confidently. Today, I collaborate with colleagues from 60+ countries, leveraging the nuanced communication and critical thinking skills nurtured in Sheffield’s classrooms.
I immersed myself in cross-cultural discussions through seminars and informal student groups. These interactions challenged me to articulate my views in diverse settings, transforming me from a hesitant international student into an active participant. While I didn’t join formal societies, the ÀÖ¾ºÌåÓý’s inclusive atmosphere encouraged me to explore global viewpoints.
I actively participated in the ÀÖ¾ºÌåÓý’s official International Student Ambassador programme. This role involved representing the ÀÖ¾ºÌåÓý at open days, leading campus tours for prospective students and families, and creating social media content about campus life. Through this experience, I developed practical skills in cross-cultural communication, public speaking, and storytelling, often translating complex academic experiences into relatable insights for international audiences. This position not only built my confidence in engaging with diverse groups but also deepened my connection to Sheffield’s community. It taught me how to bridge cultural perspectives, a skill I now use daily at the Multilateral Cooperation Center for Development Finance (MCDF) when collaborating with global stakeholders. The training I received on articulating the ÀÖ¾ºÌåÓý’s values also sharpened my ability to advocate for inclusive international initiatives in my current career.
My degree in Digital Media and Society taught me that understanding WHY societies evolve—not just HOW to use media tools—is invaluable in global roles. Seek courses that challenge assumptions, and engage with peers from different backgrounds: these 'soft' skills become your sharpest assets. In fields like international development, the ability to analyse cultural contexts critically will set you apart.
